PEARL, MS — The Gateway Grizzlies finished off their week-long, season-opening Frontier League Baseball road trip by sweeping all three games they played against the Mississippi Mud Monsters at Trustmark Park.
Gateway won the three games by scores of 8-5, 9-8, and 6-1.
The series opener and the series finale were similar contests. The Grizzlies had a big outburst inning to take control of both those games.
In the opener on Tuesday, Gateway scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-1 lead before cruising to the 8-5 victory. And in the finale on Thursday, the Grizzlies scored five runs in the third inning to take charge of the game.
In the middle game on Wednesday, Gateway led early, but lost its lead and trailed late. The Grizzlies had to score two runs with two outs to tie the game and force extra innings.
Then in the 10th, rookie Tyler Young, who had just signed with the team on Tuesday, drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly that scored Dale Thomas, a player in his second season with the Grizzlies. Thomas had three hits, an RBI, and scored three runs in Wednesday’s win.
The hitting stars in the other games were Cole Brannen and Mark Shallenberger. Brannen had five hits and also drew six walks against Mississippi. Shallenberger had three hits, an RBI, and scored two runs in the series.
Brannen has also begun the season with at least one hit in all six games.
Relief pitchers got the win in the first two games. Rookie Sam Rochard made his first professional appearance on Tuesday and pitched five strong innings out of the bullpen, in which he gave up no runs and allowed just two hits and a walk, with three strikeouts.
Veteran Sam Coonrod, who played parts of four season in the majors with the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and San Francisco Giants, pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get the win for Gateway on Wednesday, with teammate Keegan Collett doing the same in the 10th to get the save.
In Thursday’s finale, No. 1 starter Teague Conrad looked every bit like Gateway’s ace by going eight innings and allowing just one run on three hits, with one walk and five strikeouts to get the win.
The Grizzlies will host the Trois-Rivières Aigles for three games this weekend. First pitch on Friday and Saturday will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday’s game will begin at 1:05 p.m.
