SAUGET, IL — Coming out of the All-Star break, the Gateway Grizzlies hosted a huge home series against the Schaumburg Boomers over the weekend.
Gateway came into the series a game behind Schaumburg, but managed to win two of the three games to finish the weekend tied for first place in the Frontier League Midwest Conference Central Division.
The Grizzlies are now 37-21 on the season and have the least losses of any team in the Midwest Conference. The Boomers are 38-22 and have the most wins. The clubs will meet three more times this season — in a series in Schaumburg next month.
The past weekend though, mostly belonged to the Grizzlies.
Gateway won the series opener on Friday, 9-3. The Grizzlies banged out 11 hits, led by left fielder Edwin Mateo, who had three hits, including his fifth home run of the season, which led to three runs batted in and three runs scored.
Jose Alvarez had two hits and Mark Shallenberger bashed his 12th home run of the season. Starting pitcher Lukas Veinbergs (4-3) went six innings and gave up just one run on six hits, with two walks and nine strikeouts to get the win on the mound.
On Saturday, Gateway trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but came out and sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs to take a 10-5 lead.
Alvarez had another big game, with three hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Cole Brannen also had three hits, including his seventh homer of the season.
But the big hitting star of the night was third baseman D.J. Stewart, who smacked two home runs to raise his team-leading total to 13 this season. Stewart also now leads the team with 53 RBIs.
In Sunday’s game, Schaumburg scored three runs in the top of the first and led for the entire game. Reserve catcher Paxton Wallace had three hits for the Grizzlies, including his second homer of the season.
Gateway will be on the road for its next six games. After having Monday off, the Grizzlies will in Illinois all week, with three games against the Joliet Slammers on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Then, they’ll be in Chicago next weekend for a three-game set against the Windy City ThunderBolts.
The Grizzlies will return home next week to begin one of their longest homestands of the season. Gateway will host 10 straight games at Arsenal BG Ballpark, beginning on July 29. That series of games will include a doubleheader on July 30.
