NORMANDY, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team held off a late run from Southwest Baptist University to earn a 71-65 victory, Monday night in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at the Mark Twain Building.
UMSL is now 7-7 on the season and 5-2 in GLVC league play. The Tritons are tied for third place in the conference standings with Rockhurst. Missouri S&T holds first place with a 5-0 mark, while Lewis is second at 5-1.
Southwest Baptist is 6-7 on the year and tied for eighth place with a 3-4 mark in the conference.
The Tritons were led by junior point guard Matt Enright, who finished the night with a team-high 17 points, which included three three-pointers and a pair of clutch free throws in the final seconds that helped ice the game away.
UMSL led for most of the first half, which included a 13-2 run midway through that allowed the Tritons to take a 30-17 lead. But then UMSL went cold and only scored four points the rest of the half, while SBU got hot and went on a 17-4 run in the final five minutes to send the game to halftime tied at 34.
The second half began like the first, with UMSL taking charge and grabbing a quick lead. This time though, SBU responded quickly and took its own lead midway through at 50-47.
UMSL answered right back though and went on a 12-0 run, capped by a coast-to-coast rebound and layup by Enright that put the Tritons up 59-50. The teams traded three-pointers in the next minute to make the score 62-53, but then SBU went on a 12-6 spurt to make the score 68-65 with 16 seconds left.
Fortunately, that was as close as SBU would get, as UMSL forced three missed shots and made three free throws in the final seconds to close out the game.
Three other Triton players scored in double figures. Junior KC Udolisa had 16 points and seven assists; while fellow junior Troy Glover II had 14 points, seven rebounds, and four blocked shots; and senior Savon Wykle had 14 points.
SBU’s Drenin Dinkins led all scorers with 21 points, but UMSL’s defense forced him to take tough shots all night and was a big reason why he made only one of the nine three-pointers he attempted.
UMSL will begin a four-game road trip later this week, when it travels to Jefferson City on Thursday to take on GLVC newcomer Lincoln University. Later this week, the Tritons will play at No. 17 Missouri S&T.
Next week, UMSL will go on the road to play at Quincy (January 20) in a make up game that was postponed due to last week’s bad weather. Then it will play crosstown rival, Maryville, on January 23.
UMSL’s next home game will be January 30 against Illinois-Springfield. Tip off for that contest is set for 7:30 p.m.
