AMHERST, MA — Saint Louis University freshman Hope Kim scored her first collegiate goal in the game’s 63rd minute to lift the No. 22-ranked Billikens to a 1-0 Atlantic 10 Conference win over Massachusetts, Thursday afternoon at Rudd Field.
Saint Louis, which was picked to win the A-10 in the league’s preseason poll, has now won three games in a row and is 5-1-3 on the season. UMass, which came into the matchup on a four-game winning and six-game unbeaten streak, is now 5-3-1 on the year.
The teams battled to control the ball throughout the match. SLU outshot UMass 18-5, with seven Billiken shots on goal to just four for the Minutewomen.
But the only shot that mattered came midway through the second half, when Kim and another SLU freshman, Ashley Miller, hooked up for the game’s only score. Miller lifted a pass toward the UMass net and Kim, being in the right place at the right time, was the first player to get to it and tapped it into the net to put the Billikens on the board.
From there, SLU simply relied on its defense to keep UMass off the board. Goalkeeper Emily Puricelli made four saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
The grad student and native St. Louisan, now has 44 shutouts in her Billiken career. The assist was Miller’s second of the season.
Saint Louis will now enjoy a few days off, before returning home to begin a three-match homestand that will begin on Sunday, September 22, against George Washington. Opening kick at Hermann Stadium that day is set for 1 p.m.
