MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s soccer team nearly rallied from a late two-goal deficit in a rainy Sunday afternoon match at the Lou Fusz Soccer Complex against Kentucky Wesleyan. But the Tritons could only manage one of the two scores they needed, before succumbing to the visiting Panthers, 3-2.

Both teams scored in the first half. KWC got the game’s first score, and UMSL answered with a goal by Brady Glon, following a corner kick by teammate Leo Sowa. The score was Glon’s first of the season.

In the second half though, KWC took control, as it scored twice in the first 15 minutes to go up 3-1. UMSL dominated the final 15 minutes of play, but only got one goal to show for it. Sowa hit one off the crossbar in the 77th minute and then four minutes later Jack Meuse had an open goal to shoot at but his shot hit off the right post and caromed out.

The Tritons had four chances in the span of 97 seconds. Drew Schenk had the first chance but it was saved by Hannes Nilsson. Gabe Stanislawski had a chance a minute later that was saved by Nilsson. Sowa had a chance blocked and then Mylz Barrington follow up on the rebound was saved off the line by a Panther defender.

UMSL cut the deficit to one with 4:13 remaining, as Sowa buried a penalty kick chance for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. He then got a chance to tie the game shortly after, but Nilsson was there to make the save.

The Tritons finished with an 18-12 advantage in shots including 8-6 in shots on goal. UMSL also had the advantage in corner kicks with eight compared to five for KWC.

The loss dropped UMSL’s record to 1-2-1, while Kentucky Wesleyan improved to 2-1.

The Tritons will be back in action next Sunday, September 9, when they’ll begin Great Lakes Valley Conference play, with a road match against Lewis University. UMSL’s next home game will be on Friday, September 16, when the Tritons will host Quincy University at Don Dallas Field.
