MADISON, WI — The Lindenwood University men’s hockey team pulled off one of the biggest wins in program history Friday night.

The Lions went on the road to open the new season with a game against No. 9 ranked Wisconsin, and with a brilliant display of offensive aggressiveness and defensive toughness, Lindenwood came out with a 4-2 win over the Top 10-ranked Badgers in front of a crowd of 7,537 at the Kohl Center.

“We are proud of the effort our team gave,” new Lindenwood head coach Bill Muckalt said, following his team’s first ever win over a ranked opponent. “We executed when we needed to, and the power-play goal in the first period was the juice to really get this show on the road. This was definitely a statement win to start off the season, but a statement win in our program’s history.”

The Lions scored goals in all three periods, including two in the first by sophomore Jaeden Mercer. His first came on a power play 11 minutes into the game and gave Lindenwood a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin tied the score with a power play goal of its own with just under five minutes left in the first period. Mercer scored his second with just under two minutes left to put Lindenwood up 2-1.

Senior Alexander Lundman, a transfer from Bemidji State, scored two minutes into the second period to put the Lions up 3-1. That was the only score of the second period, as Lindenwood’s defense stymied every Wisconsin scoring chance in the second stanza.

Wisconsin scored early in the third to get within 3-2, but Lindenwood’s Artyom Borshyov scored with 3:23 left to put the Lions back up by two.

From there, goalkeeper Owen Bartoszkiewicz made sure Wisconsin got no more scores to preserve the Lindenwood victory. The sophomore, who came to Lindenwood from Minnesota, finished the night with 34 saves on 36 chances.

Along with Mercer’s two goals, seniors David Gagnon and John Evans both had two assists. Noah Houle, Drew Kuzma, and Ethan Zielke each had one assist.

The Lions (1-0) and Badgers (0-1) will play again on Saturday. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
