The Lindenwood University men’s hockey team returned home after what seemed like a season-long road trip all over the country, this past Friday and Saturday, and did so with a pair of joyous victories over Stonehill College, at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights.
The Lions defeated the visiting Skyhawks 5-2 on Friday, and 10-3 on Saturday.
The two victories lifted Lindenwood’s record to 7-17-0 on the season, while Stonehill fell to 13-6-2.
In the first game, Stonehill scored the first goal of the game. But Lindenwood answered by scoring four straight to take a 4-1 lead early in the third period.
The Skyhawks scored again midway through the final stanza, but the Lions answered with a power play goal with nine minutes to go that essentially put the game away.
Five different players scored goals for Lindenwood in the game, including junior forward Hunter Johannes, who scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season, and sophomore Kyle Jeffers, who scored what proved to be the game-winner late in the second period.
Sophomore goalkeeper Trent Burnham made 23 saves to help the Lions preserve their lead.
In the second game, Lindenwood came out firing quickly and never really let up.
The Lions scored their first goal just 26 seconds in, and then added three more in the first period to go ahead 4-0. Then, in the second period, Lindenwood added four more goals to take an 8-2 lead into the third.
From that point, the Lions were able to cruise into what proved to be their highest scoring victory of the season.
Ten different players had multi-point nights, led by Johannes, who had four assists, and teammates Andy Willis, David Gagnon, and Jack Anderson, who each had a goal and two assists.
Lindenwood will look to keep its hot streak going this coming weekend, when it travels west for a two-game series against Arizona State.
