Freshman quarter Cole Dugger, making just his second collegiate start, completed 16-of-23 passes for 303 yards and five touchdowns to lead the visiting Lindenwood University football team to an overpowering 53-10 victory over William Jewell College, Saturday afternoon at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Mo.

Dugger, who took over as Lindenwood’s primary signal caller two weeks ago, after Player of the Year candidate Cade Brister went down with a season-ending injury, threw three touchdown passes in the first quarter and two more in the second, as the Lions pounced on the host Cardinals to take a 34-10 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Lindenwood got a 41-yard touchdown run by sophomore Robert Giaimo, a touchdown pass from receiver-turned backup quarterback Alex Faddoul, and two field goals by kicker Logan Siebert to outscore William Jewell 19-0 to put the game away.

Giaimo finished the game with 146 rushing yards on 11 carries, and teammate Payton Rose caught eight passes for 143 yards and three of Dugger’s touchdowns to help power a Lindenwood offense that totaled 592 yards and produced 24 first downs. William Jewell, on the other hand, had just 213 yards and 14 first downs.

The victory was Lindenwood’s seventh in a row and lifted the Lions’ overall record to 7-2 and their Great Lakes Valley Conference record to 5-0. And coupled with Indianapolis’ loss to Missouri S&T on Saturday night, the win also allowed Lindenwood to claim no worse than a share of the GLVC championship this season.

The Lions have just two GLVC games left this season, and with no league losses and every other team in the conference having at least two, no one in the conference could finish with a better record than Lindenwood.

Next Up: Lindenwood will have the chance to clinch the outright GLVC title next Saturday, when it goes back on the road to play Missouri S&T. That game in Rolla, Mo., is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m.

Lindenwood’s next home game and its regular season finale, will be in two weeks, on Saturday, November 13, when the Lions will host McKendree University at Hunter Stadium. That game is also scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
