ST. CHARLES, MO — The Lindenwood Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull off a dramatic comeback and earn a 8-7 win over the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Friday afternoon at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
Junior third baseman Bryson Arnette delivered a two-out, two-run single to tie the game at 8, then scored the winning run on a basehit sophomore first baseman Jack Meyer.
The victory was Lindenwood’s second of the season and ended a four-game losing streak.
“We continue to battle and stay in games,” Lindenwood head coach P.J. Finigan said. “If we can take bats, the entire game, like we do in the ninth inning, we might score some serious runs. Proud of our guys competing for nine innings to get a win.”
The teams traded the lead throughout the day. UNO gained the edge first by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning.
The Lions (2-6) responded by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Arnette began the frame by getting hit by a pitch. Dawson Hokuf singled to left to put two runners on.
Meyer drove in Arnette with a single to get Lindenwood on the board. Logan Stevens singled on a bunt to load the bases.
A sacrifice fly by Filip Sarota resulted in Hokuf scoring. Evan Funkhouser sent a long sacrifice fly to left field to score Meyer. Kam Edwards walked to load the bases with two outs. Jett singled to score Stellato and Stevens.
UNO scored a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to take the lead, which set up the dramatic ninth for Lindenwood’s win.
Reliever Easton Rakers (2-0) got the final five outs to earn the win on the mound.
At the plate, Hokuf, Meyer, and Stevens each had two hits, while Meyer, Arnette, and James Jett each had two RBIs.
Lindenwood will continue its homestand on Saturday, when it hosts Bradley. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
