ST. CHARLES, MO — The Lindenwood University women’s soccer team picked up its first win of the season, Thursday night in its home opener, when it defeated Chicago State, 4-2, in a non-conference match at Hunter Stadium.

Senior forward Mia Corrigan scored two goals, and teammates Anna Johnson and Mattie Ohlsen each added one, as Lindenwood took control of the action early and jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead that led to a thrilling victory for the Lions.

“I am extremely proud of our team for taking care of business at home,” LU head coach Dave Musso said. “Anytime you score four goals, it’s a great day at the office. “We will keep learning and growing as we continue to prepare for OVC play in three weeks.”

Johnson scored the game’s first goal, on a pass from teammate Eyglo Thorsteinsdottir. Corrigan got her first goal of the night a little while later to put the Lions up 2-0.

Ohlsen scored on a play assisted by Lily Sutter, just after halftime to make it 3-0. Then after Chicago State got on the board, Corrigan added an unassisted goal to make it 4-1.

Chicago State got its second goal of the night a couple minutes later. But that was as close as the visitors would get, as the Lindenwood defense shut down the Cougars over the final 12 minutes of the game to preserve the win.

Lindenwood outshot Chicago State 17-8, and had an edge of eight shots on goal to the Cougars’ five. The Lions also had six corner kicks, while Chicago State had just one.

The Lions will now get to enjoy some time off, before getting back into action on Thursday, August 31, when they’ll host Murray State in a game at Hunter Stadium.

That contest is scheduled to kick off at noon and will serve as a header for LU’s home football opener, which is also on Thursday at 7 p.m.
