NASHVILLE, TN — The Lindenwood University women’s soccer team picked up an exciting victory in its 2024 season opener, Thursday night.
The Lions traveled south to play Belmont University in a non-conference game at E.S. Rose Park and came home with a 3-1 win over the Bruins.
Freshmen Sophia Mueller and Mackenzie Compton scored the first two goals for Lindenwood, while sophomore Anna Johnson added a score in the late going to cinch a Lions win in the first game of the season.
Mueller, a Kirkwood native, opened the scoring with 25-yard blast from outside of the box that made the score 1-0 just before halftime. Belmont responded with a score just after halftime to make it 1-1.
Compton, who is from Wentzville, gave the Lions the lead again, when she scored in the 52nd minute, following a pass from teammate Tasneem Dizdarevic.
Then late in the game, with Liberty trying desperately to make a play and tie the score, Compton broke free and found Johnson, who banged home a shot to put Lindenwood ahead 3-1. That score in the 82nd minute, was Johnson’s third career goal and essentially put the game away for the Lions.
Lindenwood goalkeeper Jordan Hollingsworth, a sophomore from O’Fallon, made four saves in her fourth career start. She also earned her second career win.
The Lions (1-0) will be back on the pitch on Sunday, when they’ll take on Nebraska-Omaha in a game in Omaha.
Lindenwood’s home opener will be next Thursday, August 22, when it will host Indiana University-Indianapolis in a match at Hunter Stadium. That contest is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
