NORTH EASTON, MA — The Lindenwood University men’s hockey team set the ice ablaze Friday night against Stonehill College.
In what was easily its best single-game performance of the season, the Lions skated up, down, and all around the Skyhawks for a 10-1.
Lindenwood started scoring early and never eased up. At 2:52 in the opening twenty minutes, Jake Southgate scored on an amazing display of teamwork, as Jack Anderson and Jaeden Mercier found him in scoring position.
Two minutes later, Austin Fraser lodged the puck into the back of the net, with Coltan Wilkie and Drew Kuzma being credited with the assist. To wrap up the frame, Mitch Allard scored at 19:25.8 on a pass from Zach Aughe.
Up 3-0 entering the second, the Lions exploded with five goals. At 2:09, Caige Sterzer and Ethan Zielke maneuvered the puck to Anderson, who glided it into the net. Kieran Ruscheinski scored at 10:58, Mercier and Southgate assisted. Zielke scored on a pass from Aughe at 13:09. David Gagnon, with an assist from Mercier, scored at 14:51. Patrick Schmiedlin and Ruscheinski were credited with the assist on Caleb Price’s 17:01 goal.
In the final twenty minutes, Stonehill scored their only goal of the contest. At 14:02, Aughe scored an unassisted goal and at 17:21, he scored a power play goal with Zielke on the assist.
Trent Burnham served the Lions in the net, only conceding one goal, while recording 25 saves.
“Best 60-minute game we played this season,” Lindenwood head coach Rick Zombo said.
The Lions and Skyhawks will meet in the second game of their two-game series on Saturday.
