DAYTON, OH — The Lindenwood University men’s basketball team lost its first game of the season and first game as an NCAA Division I team, Monday evening, when it fell 73-46 on the road to No. 24-ranked Dayton.
The host Flyers used a couple of early first half runs to jump out to a 35-21 halftime lead. Then, after Lindenwood scored the first five points of the second half to get within nine points, Dayton went on an 18-3 run that essentially put the game away.
“The score won’t show it, but we showed a really good defensive effort and commitment for a long time against a really good team,” said head coach Kyle Gerdeman. “It was pleasing to see that toughness, especially on a night where it was hard to score.”
Lindenwood was led by senior guard Chris Childs, who scored 15 points and added two assists. Teammate Keenon Cole came off the bench to score 10 points and grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
The Lions had a tough shooting night against a very good Dayton defense. Overall, Lindenwood made just 18-of-55 shots (32.7 percent), which included just four made three-pointers on 20 attempts (20.0 percent). The Lions also struggled at the free throw line, where they made just six-of-14 attempts (42.9 percent).
Lindenwood will look to pick up its first win, when it hosts its home opener, Thursday night at Hyland Arena. That evening, the Lions will take on Hannibal-LaGrange, with opening tip scheduled for 7 p.m.
