ST. CHARLES, MO — The Lindenwood University men’s basketball team earned its first win as an NCAA Division I program Thursday night, when it defeated visiting Hannibal-LaGrange, 85-58, at Hyland Arena.

Four players scored in double figures for Lindenwood, led by senior point guard Kevin Caldwell Jr., who had 20 points to go along with seven assists and two steals.

Fellow guards Brandon Trimble and Chris Childs scored 16 points and 14 points, respectively, while forward David Ware added 10 points and 10 rebounds, as the Lions used a dominant second half to pull away for proved to be an easy victory.

“I’m happy for our guys to earn our first win,” Lindenwood head coach Kyle Gerdeman said. “We are just trying to get better every day with a bunch of new guys, and I thought we did that tonight.”

The Lions began the game with a flurry, as it outscored the Trojans 18-4 in the first four minutes. Then after, Hannibal-LaGrange rallied to take the late in the half, Lindenwood closed with a 12-2 run to take a 41-33 lead into halftime.

The second half began with another 12-2 Lindenwood run, which put the Lions ahead 53-35. From that point on, the Lions never looked back and cruised their way to their first win of the 2022-23 season.

Three-point shooting and rebounding were key factors in the Lindenwood victory. The Lions connected on 12-of-26 threes, including four apiece by Caldwell and Childs, and another three by Trimble. And on the boards, Lindenwood grabbed 41, while Hannibal-LaGrange could only manage 31.

The Lions are now 1-1 on the season, but will look to make it two straight wins, when it travels to Columbia, Mo., on Sunday to take on the University of Missouri. That game is scheduled to tip off at 5 p.m., and will be streamed live on SEC Network-Plus.
