MENDOTA HEIGHTS, MN — The Lindenwood Lions men’s hockey team rallied from behind three different times on Friday to earn itself a 4-4 tie in a road game against St. Thomas University.
The host Tommies led 2-0, 3-2, and 4-3, but the Lions managed to tie the score each time, in what proved to be a thrilling matchup between two up-and-coming NCAA small school programs.
Sophomore defenseman Kieran Ruscheinski had a goal and an assist to lead the Lindenwood offense. Teammates Kyle Jeffers, Shane Lavelle, and Adam Conquest scored goals as well, while Kabore Dunn, Austin Fraser, and Mitch Allard all had assists.
Goalkeeper Trent Burnham made 59 saves, including 26 in the first period and six in overtime, to keep Lindenwood in the game, as St. Thomas’ high-flying offense began and finished the game with a barrage of shots and scoring chances.
The Tommies got their first two goals late in the first period, but Lindenwood answered when Ruscheinski scored his first goal of the season and Jeffers followed with his second, midway through the second, to make the score 2-2.
St. Thomas re-took the lead late in the second to send the game into the third period ahead 3-2.
Lavelle tied the score at 3, on a nifty play early in the third, on a set up by Fraser.
But St. Thomas re-took the lead again, on a power play goal midway through the third, and looked like it might be able to close out the game with that one-goal edge.
Fortunately, Conquest got his first goal of the season with 6:51 to go to tie the score at 4.
Neither team was able to score in the remaining time, so the clubs ended the night with a draw.
Lindenwood is now 1-2-2 on the season, while St. Thomas is 1-3-1, after playing its third overtime game of the season already.
The teams will meet again on Saturday, in a contest that is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
