MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO — The Lindenwood University men’s hockey team enjoyed its best weekend of the season, this past Friday and Saturday, when the Lions swept a two-game home series against Stonehill College.

On Friday, the Lions dominated from start-to-finish in a 7-1 win. Then on Saturday, Lindenwood claimed a back-and-forth battle, with a 6-5 overtime win.

“It was a great sweep for Lindenwood,” LU head coach Rick Zombo said. “Very nice win for my guys. They deserved to win and deserve to enjoy the feeling.”

The two victories lifted the Lions to 5-14-3 on the season. Stonehill is now 0-26 this year.

In Friday’s win, the standout player was junior Aiden Yakimchuk, who scored three goals and had two assists. It was the first NCAA Division I hat trick for a Lindenwood player ever.

Kyle Jeffers had a big night as well. He scored two goals and had an assist.

But that only set the stage for Jeffers to be the star of Saturday night, when he scored the game-winner, on a breakaway in overtime to lift the Lions to the win. Caige Sterzer had two goals and an assist as well.

The opponent will get much tougher next weekend, when the Lions travel west to play No. 18-ranked Arizona State in a two-game set in Tempe.

Lindenwood’s final two home games of the year will come February 16 and 17, when the Lions will host Alaska-Anchorage.
