Even though it didn’t play this past weekend, the University of Missouri football team moved up five spots — from No. 19 to No. 14 — in the Associated Press Top 25 college football poll, which was released on Sunday.
Missouri is 5-0 and coming off a dominant win over UMass, two Saturdays ago.
But last weekend, a number of wild upsets around the country helped Mizzou move up in the rankings. Top-ranked teams, Penn State and Texas both lost to unranked opponents and fell completely out of the Top 25, while other ranked teams like Iowa State and Cincinnati also lost and fell in the rankings.
Another team that was ahead of Missouri in last week’s rankings, Vanderbilt, lost by two touchdowns at home to Mizzou’s next opponent, Alabama. The Commodores were No. 16 and fell to No. 20.

Alabama moved up from No. 10 to No. 8 and will be the highest ranked Missouri has faced this season. The Crimson Tide beat the Tigers 34-0 in Tuscaloosa last year, are on a four-game win streak, and are looking to knock off a third straight ranked opponent, after defeating then-No. 5 Georgia in Athens two weeks ago.
Ohio State remained the top-ranked team in the country for the fifth straight week. Miami moved up to No. 2, after defeating rival Florida State last Saturday, and Oregon dropped one slot to No. 3.
SEC foes Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma make up Nos. 4, 5, and 6, respectively, with Indiana holding the No. 7 slot ahead of Alabama. Texas Tech made its first appearance in the Top 10, at No. 9, after its blowout win over Houston last week. And Georgia, which fell to No. 12 after its loss to Bama two weeks ago, jumped back up to No. 10 this week.
LSU, Tennessee, and Georgia Tech are the three teams in front of Mizzou at No. 11, No. 12, and No. 13, with Michigan just behind the Tigers at No. 15.

When Mizzou hosts Alabama on Saturday, it will be one of the biggest home games for the Tigers in program history. With a win, Missouri would serve official notice to the rest of the country that it was a team to be reckoned with this season.
A win would also probably vault Mizzou into the Top 10 and put the Tigers on a path to clinching a spot in the CFB playoffs at the end of the season.
Kickoff on Saturday is set for 11 a.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ABC.
