KANSAS CITY, MO — After beginning the season with eight straight comfortable wins, the University of Missouri men’s basketball team suffered its second straight loss on Sunday, when the Tigers fell 80-60 in its annual Border War Showdown against archrival Kansas at the T-Mobile Center.
KU made a key run late in the first half and again at the beginning of the second to turn a tight game into what became a blowout.
“This game was a game of runs,” Mizzou head coach Dennis Gates said. “I thought it changed when there was a double tech instead of a flagrant that was called in that first half. That was a point I thought the game changed, and they went on to, I believe, a 20-plus (run).”

The Jayhawks jumped out to a 7-1 before a Robinson triple knocked the lead to two. Two Mitchell fastbreaks put the Tigers in front for the first time, 11-9.
Missouri and Kansas traded buckets as the half continued with three lead changes through the first 12 minutes of the contest. A Mitchell fastbreak gave the Tigers a two-point advantage, 23-21, leading to a Jayhawk timeout with 4:28 to play in the first stanza.
However, Kansas took the edge to finish the first and start the second. A 12-2 spurt to finish the opening period, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer, gave the hosts a 33-25 halftime lead. KU then started off the second half notching an 11-1 run to further its advantage to 18 points, 44-26.
Missouri fought back with an 8-2 run, sparked by a Luke Northweather triple, cutting the Kansas lead to 12 with over 11 minutes remaining. However, Missouri was unable to close the gap any further as KU finished off the victory.

The Tigers are now 8-2 on the season and will return to Columbia for its next two games, which will both be this week.
Mizzou will host Alabama State on on Thursday, December 11, and then face Bethune-Cookman next Sunday, December 14. Tip off on Thursday at Mizzou Arena is set 7 p.m., while Sunday’s contest will tip at 1 p.m. Sunday’s game will be broadcast live on the SEC Network.
