ST. LOUIS, MO — Almost nothing went right for the University of Missouri men’s basketball team in its annual Braggin’ Rights Game, Monday night at Enterprise Center against No. 20 Illinois.

The Tigers didn’t make many shots. They didn’t rebound well. They didn’t defend very well. And they pretty much just got their butts kicked.

The final score was Illinois 91, Missouri 48, but the game didn’t even seem that close, as the Illini stormed past Mizzou early and cruised to an easy win.

“I take it on my shoulders, as the leader, as the head coach,” Mizzou head coach Dennis Gates said afterward. “It’s on me. This game is on me. I told my players that in the locker room, it’s on me. Do not feel bad about it. Respond to it.”

The Tigers actually stayed close through the first nine minutes, with the game tied 14-14. But then Illinois went on an 11-2 run and then a 14-4 run to go into halftime with a 41-25 lead.

In that stretch, Illinois hit five three-pointers and Mizzou missed seven shots. Once the Illini grabbed the lead, they never let it go.

“I just thought our guys, at that point, hit a wall,” Gates said. “I thought we were in rotation and got out of rotation. They were able to get their hands on a lot of those rebounds, whether it was keeping it alive or not. But once they secured it, they ended up executing on their makes and it was just make after make.”

Only two Missouri players scored in double figures on Monday. Sebastian Mack came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points, while Anthony Robinson finished with 12 points. Illinois’ Keaton Wagler led all scorers with 22 points.

“Illinois is a very long team,” Robinson said. “They were in the gaps a lot and made it difficult for us to finish over their length. So just with that, you gotta go back to the drawing board and just work on the shots.”

The Tigers will go into the holiday break with a 10-3 record. They’ll be back in action when Southeastern Conference play begins on January 3, with a game in Columbia against defending NCAA champion Florida. That contest will tip off at 7:30 p.m., and will be televised nationally on the SEC Network.
