The University of Missouri football team has been pretty good in its first two games of the season.
The defense hasn’t allowed a point, and going back to the last game of last season, it hasn’t allowed a touchdown in 12 quarters. And the Mizzou offense is averaging 44.5 points per game.
The Tigers have looked awfully fierce in their first two games.
That’s probably why the Associated Press moved Missouri up to No. 6 in the country in its new Top 25 college football poll, which was released Sunday evening. That’s the highest Mizzou has been ranked since Week 3 of the 2008 season, when the Tigers were also No. 6.
Mizzou rose three slots from last week’s poll. Oregon, which was No. 7 fell to No. 9 after barely beating Boise State. Penn State stayed at No. 8 following a close win of its own against Bowling Green. And Notre Dame, which suffered the biggest upset of the weekend, fell from No. 5 to No. 18 after losing on a late field goal to Northern Illinois, which entered the poll this week at No. 25.
In the USA Today Coaches Poll, Mizzou is ranked No. 8.

Missouri is one of three SEC teams ranked in the AP’s top seven this week, which is the first time that many teams from the same conference were ranked in that high.
Georgia received 54 out of a possible 63 first-place votes to keep a firm hold on No. 1. No. 2 Texas jumped a spot after dominating defending national champion Michigan on the road and received four first-place votes.
Ohio State from the Big Ten, fell from No. 2 to No. 3. Then it was four more SEC teams, with Alabama at No. 4, Mississippi moving up a spot to No. 5, followed by Mizzou at 6, and then Tennessee, which made a big jump from No. 14 to No. 7, after the Vols blew out North Carolina State on Saturday.
Penn State, Oregon, and Miami round out the Top 10. Oklahoma (No. 15) and LSU (No. 16) are two other SEC teams in the Top 25. LSU, which lost to No. 11 USC in its opener, is the top ranked team with a loss.
