COLUMBIA, MO — The University of Missouri soccer team knocked off cross-state rival Missouri State, 2-0, in the 2024 season opener for both teams, Thursday night at Walton Soccer Stadium.

The Tigers controlled the action from start to finish. Missouri outshot Missouri State 15-11, with six shots on goal for Mizzou to just four for the Lady Bears.

Missouri broke on top in the ninth minute, when junior forward Kylee Simmons led an attack into the Missouri State box and fired a shot that was stopped and deflected away by the Lady Bears’ goalkeeper.

Fortunately for the Tigers, the ball caromed right to senior Milena Fischer, who slammed a shot into the net for a Missouri goal that made the score 1-0. The goal was the eighth of Fischer’s career and her first since 2022.

The Missouri defense took over from there by controlling the ball and limiting Missouri State to almost no scoring chances.

In the 55th minute, the Tigers scored again when junior midfielder Keegan Good launched a shot from outside the box that sailed over the Missouri State goalkeeper’s outstretched arm and into the back of the net to make the score 2-0. It was the fourth goal of Good’s career.

The Mizzou defense shut the Lady Bears down after that and allowed the Tigers to cruise to a season-opening win.

Simmons led Mizzou with four shots. Teammate Leah Selm had three shots, with two of them on goal.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Bella Hollenbach made four saves to earn the victory. It was the ninth win and fifth shutout of her career.

The Tigers will be back in action on Sunday, when they’ll host a non-conference match against No. 10-ranked Memphis. Opening kick at Walton Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m., and the match will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
