SPRINGFIELD, MO — The University of Missouri women’s basketball team won its 2022-23 season opener on Monday at Great Southern Bank Arena, when it defeated host Missouri State, 68-51.
Senior forward Hayley Frank scored a game-high 17 points, and helped the Tigers rally from an early deficit to roll to their first win of the new season.
The key point came midway through the first quarter, when Missouri went on a 17-0 run, capped by a Frank three-pointer, to go ahead 21-9. The Tigers would not trail again the rest of the game.
Junior guard Sara-Rose Smith came off the bench to add 10 points and 10 rebounds, while new Tiger Katlyn Gilbert, a grad student transfer from Notre Dame, had nine points, three assists, and was a key factor in Mizzou’s dominant defensive effort.
The Tigers held the Lady Bears to just 19.4 percent shooting (6-31) in the first half, and led 31-17 at halftime.
The second half was more of the same, as Mizzou led by as many as 22 points late in the third quarter, before eventually winning by 17.
The Tigers didn’t shoot the ball well from three-point range, as they made just one of 13 attempts on the night. But Mizzou was especially aggressive at attacking the paint and rim, which resulted in 22 layup opportunities that helped the Tigers outscore the Lady Bears 44-24 around the basket.
Mizzou, which is 40-9 all-time in season openers and 12-1 in its first game of the season with Robin Pingeton as its coach, will now get ready for its own home opener, which will be on Thursday, November 10, at Mizzou Arena.
The Tigers will be hosting Bradley that evening, with the game scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.
