FULTON, MO — Just a few hours after finding out it had been ranked the No. 1 team in the country, the Washington University women’s soccer team celebrated by producing its first shutout win of the season, a 3-0 victory over longtime, in-state foe, Westminster College, at that school’s Mueller Stadium.
The Bears, who were ranked No. 2 in the preseason and remained so through the first two weeks of the season, moved up to No. 1, after previous No. 1 and defending national champion Cal Lutheran had a tie in a match against an unranked opponent last week.
At the same time, WashU had won its first three games by a combined score of 15-3. That was enough to make voters decide that the Bears should be the top-ranked team in the country. And that became revealed when the new poll was released Tuesday morning.
And then Tuesday night, the Bears played every bit like the best team in the country, as they stymied Westminster for the entire 90 minute match.
The game was scoreless through the first 33 minutes, until WashU broke through with a goal by junior Kerrigan Ferland in the 34th minute. The play was set up and assisted by freshman Kate Martin and it was the first goal of Ferland’s college career.
The Bears added a second goal just before halftime, when sophomore Anna Rosato scored the first goal of her college career on a rebound shot in the 44th minute.
Junior Grace Ehlert added her fourth goal of the season in the 79th minute. Dynamic freshman Oliva Clemons set the play up for her first assist of the season. Clemons lead the Bears with five goals this year.
Sidney Conner got the win in goal and earned an easy shutout as the WashU defense held Westminster to just one shot on goal.
The Bears (4-0) will play two more games this week. The club will be in Greencastle, Ind. this weekend to face DePauw University on Friday. They will then play Rhodes College on Saturday.
WashU’s next home game is next Tuesday, September 17, when the Bears ill host Illinois Wesleyan at Francis Olympic Field.
