KNOXVILLE, TN — The No. 11 University of Missouri softball team dropped its series opener to No. 8 Tennessee, 9-0, in a five-inning run-rule contest, Friday evening at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

The defending SEC Champion Lady Vols used a big offensive start which included a pair of doubles, a pair of singles, and a grand slam in the first inning to build a quick 7-0 lead.

Tennessee added runs in the second and third innings to make the score 9-0.

The Tigers were slowed down offensively by Lady Vol starter Karlyn Pickens, who retired nine straight MU batters spanning from the first inning to the fourth inning before Kara Daly connected on a two-out double in the top of the fourth.

Madison Walker drew a one-out walk in the fifth, however the Tigers could not spark a run as Tennessee closed out the 9-0 win. Jenna Laird went 0-for-2 and saw her nine-game hitting streak come to an end.

Mizzou and Tennessee will play Game 2 of their series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
