CLAYTON, MO — The Washington University women’s volleyball team took a short trip down the road to take on longtime rival Fontbonne University on Wednesday, and in doing so, the No. 14-ranked Bears made quick work of the host Griffins, as WashU swept Fontbonne three sets to none in a match at Mabee Gymnasium.

Fourteen WashU players had at least one kill and 13 had at least one defensive dig, as the Bears played all 20 players on the roster and got contributions from all of them.

Senior hitter McKenzie Washington led WashU with nine kills and grad student Isabella Lipacis had six kills and two blocks. Five other players had at least three kills, including seniors Zoe Foster and Jasmine Sells, who both had four.

Junior Sam Buckley had 33 assists and seven digs. Lipacis led the team with nine digs.

WashU never trailed in the entire match, which the Bears won by scores of 25-17, 25-22, and 25-22. Though the host Griffins did produce some interesting moments in the second set, when they rallied from behind to tie the score twice.

But the Bears never back down and eventually won that set, as it did the others, with strong play at the net. Overall, WashU had 42 kills to Fontbonne’s 31 and had just 18 hitting errors to the Griffins’ 23.

The victory was WashU’s fourth straight and raised the club’s season record to 5-2. Fontbonne fell to 3-3.

The Bears will be very busy this weekend. The team will be in Dubuque, Iowa to play in the Loras Invitational hosted by Loras College.

WashU will play four matches — two on Friday and two on Saturday — in the event. On Friday, the Bears will play Wisconsin-River Falls and Loras. Then on Saturday, they’ll play St. Norbert and Wisconsin Lutheran.

WashU’s next home match will be next weekend as part of the Bear Invite at the WashU Field House. The Bears will play Gustavus Aldophus on Friday, September 20. Then on Saturday, September 21, WashU will play La Verne and Cornell.
