MANHATTAN, NY — The No. 14-ranked Washington University men’s basketball team led for all but 30 seconds of its showdown with No. 13 New York University on Friday.

Unfortunately, the only time of the game when the Bears didn’t have the lead was the final 30 seconds, in a heartbreaking 65-64 loss to the host Violets.

The defeat dropped WashU to 12-3 on the year and 2-2 in UAA league play. NYU has the same marks at 12-3 and 2-2.

The Bears led by as many as 10 points in the second half, taking a 62-52 edge on a three-point play layup and free throw Will Grudzinski with 4:02 left in the game. But the Violets scored the next 13 straight points to go ahead 65-62 with 36 seconds left on the clock. The go-ahead bucket came on a three-pointer by Spencer Freedman.

WashU had a couple of chances to tie in the final seconds, but it missed on a couple of three-point attempts. Then on its final possession, NYU fouled Grudzinski to keep the Bears from having a chance to even attempt a tying three.

Grudzinski went to the free throw line and made the first free throw. He then tried to miss the second, in hopes that someone on his team would get the rebound and score a basket that could tie the game. But the free throw went in, making the score 65-64 with just 1.2 seconds left.

NYU was able to inbound the ball to run out the clock and preserve what proved to be a heart-stopping victory for the home team.

Hayden Doyle had 20 points and six assists to lead the Bears. Kyle Beedon had 12 points, on four three-point makes, and Grudzinski added 10 points and three steals. Yogi Oliff and Calvin Kapral each scored seven points, with Oliff adding a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Bears will get Saturday off, before returning to action on Sunday with a game against Brandeis.

WashU’s next home game is set for Thursday, January 26, against Carnegie-Mellon.
