COLUMBIA, MO — The No. 16-ranked University of Missouri softball team banged out 11 hits and rallied from behind twice in a back-and-forth 10-9 win, Friday night over No. 3-ranked LSU in a Southeastern Conference game at the Mizzou Softball Stadium.

Missouri got two hits, four runs batted in, and two runs scored from junior centerfielder Alex Honnold and what proved to be the game-winning RBI hit from freshman Madison Walker in a battle between two sets of Tigers that saw both teams grab the lead throughout the game.

LSU got three runs in the top of the first to take its first lead. Then, Mizzou answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the first and four more in the bottom of the second to take a 7-3 lead.

The Bayou Bengals responded with three runs in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 9-7 lead. That knocked Missouri starting pitcher Laurin Krings out of the game. She gave up all nine runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings pitched.

Mizzou relievers Marissa McCann and Taylor Pannell came in to pitch the rest of the game and didn’t give up another run.

That allowed the Mizzou bats to get going again and rally to re-take the lead.

First, Missouri got a solo home run from Julia Crenshaw in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 9-8. Then, after a single by Kara Daly and a walk to Maddie Gallagher, Katie Chester drilled a single to left that scored Daly to tie the score at 9.

McCann pitched scoreless fifth and sixth innings to keep the game tied, which set up a dramatic bottom of the sixth, where Missouri took the lead.

Gallagher led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Chester. That brought up Walker, who drilled a base hit to right-center that scored Gallagher and gave Mizzou the lead for good.

Pannell came in to pitch the seventh and plowed through LSU to get the final three outs for her fifth save of the season. McCann (3-1) got the win after going 2 2/3 innings and allowing no runs with one hit and one strikeout.

Honnold wasn’t the only Mizzou hitter to have a big day. Daly had two hits, an RBI, and scored two runs. Chester had two hits and two RBIs. Crenshaw’s homer was her second of the season. And Jenna Laird had a hit, drew two walks, and scored two runs.

Mizzou and LSU will play Game 2 of their three-game set on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
