ST. LOUIS — The No. 16 ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team delivered one of its most impressive performances of the 2022-23 season on Saturday, when it blasted visiting University of Illinois-Springfield, 89-62, in a game at UMSL’s Mark Twain Building.

Four different Tritons scored in double figures, as UMSL shot a season-best 60.3 percent from the field, which included a red-hot 65 percent from three-point range.

Grad student senior Victor Nwagbaraocha scored 21 points to lead the Tritons, while teammate Donovan Vickers added 20 points, and Isaiah Fuller and Bowen Sandquist had 14 points and 12 points, respectively.

UMSL took control right from the start, as the home team began the game with a 14-2 run, and following its initial bucket, held UIS scoreless for the six minutes.

The Tritons took their largest first half lead just before the half, when they led 41-20.

The second half was much like the first, as UMSL jumped out quickly and pushed its lead to 61-35 with 14:08 left in the game. From that point on, the Tritons would cruise to a victory that improved the team’s overall record to 16-3 and its Great Lakes Valley Conference mark to 8-3.

Illinois-Springfield fell to 12-7 overall and 6-5 in the GLVC.

After winning both games of its quick homestand this past Thursday and Saturday, UMSL will be back out on the road for two games next week. The Tritons will be in Liberty, Mo., on Thursday, to take on William Jewell, before heading to Kirksville, Mo., next Saturday, for a game against Truman State.

UMSL’s next home game will come in just under two weeks, on Thursday, February 2, when the Tritons will host Southwest Baptist at the Mark Twain Building. The contest is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
