CLAYTON, MO — After suffering a tough last second loss in a game against the University of Chicago last weekend, the No. 19-ranked Washington University men’s basketball team nearly had it happen again on Sunday against Rochester University.
The Bears led by three points late, but couldn’t stop the visiting Yellowjackets from knocking down a tying three with 28 seconds left that sent the game to overtime. Then, in OT, WashU led by three again with just a few seconds left and nearly gave that lead away as well, before finally forcing a missed shot as time expired to claim a heart-stopping 80-79 win at the WashU Field House.
Four different WashU players scored in double-figures on Sunday, led by 6-foot-8 big man Calvin Kapral, who notched 21 points to go along with six rebounds and two blocked shots.
Kapral made the free throw that gave the Bears the lead for good at 78-77, following a technical foul on Rochester’s Mitchell Kerschner. WashU’s Hayden Doyle added a basket to put the Bears up 80-77 with just over a minute left.
That seemed like it might be enough when Rochester missed a three attempt on its next possession and the Bears got the rebound. But WashU missed a shot on its next possession and that gave the Yellowjackets another chance to tie.
Rochester’s Matt Wiele made a layup with seven seconds left to pull his team to within one. Then things got really tight when WashU committed a five-second foul on the ensuing inbounds play to give the ball back to the Yellowjackets.
Fortunately though, on Rochester’s last shot, which was taken by Malachi Moore, WashU’s Doyle blocked it as time expired to cinch the win for the Bears.
Drake Kindsvater 18 points and nine rebounds, Yogi Oliff had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Kyle Beedon had 12 points on four three-point makes to go along with Kapral’s 21, as WashU improved its record to 12-2 and 2-1 in UAA league play. Rochester fell to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the UAA.
The Bears will be on the road for two games next weekend. They’ll play #4 NYU on Friday, January 19, and Brandeis on Sunday, January 21.
WashU’s next home game is set for January 26 against Carnegie-Mellon.
