PROVIDENCE, R.I. — An early season showdown between Top 25 nationally-ranked teams ended in a 1-1 draw, when No. 21 Saint Louis University played No. 23 Brown University at Brown’s Stevenson-Pincince Field.

Sophomore Julia Simon scored her second goal of the season and senior goalkeeper Emily Puricelli made five saves to lead Saint Louis, while Brown’s Brittany Raphino her team-leading third goal of the season for the Bears.

Simon’s goal came 1:59 into the game on a failed clearing attempt by a Brown defender. Unless flying away, the ball bounced right to Simon, who fired a a shot from 16 yards out, past the Brown goalie, to give the Billikens a 1-0 lead.

Raphino’s score came on a race to the ball up the right wing, which she won, and was able to turn into a goal following a nifty move to get around a SLU defender.

Both teams had scoring chances in the final 25 minutes, but neither was able to get anything past either keeper. The Billikens outshot the Bears 12-11, but Brown held the edge in shots on goal at 6-4. Saint Louis earned 12 corners to Brown’s three.

SLU is now 4-2-1 on the season, while three-time defending Ivy League champion Brown is 3-1-1.

The Billikens will play the second of three consecutive road matches when they face No. 24 Nebraska on Sunday in Lincoln. Opening kick is set for 1 p.m.
