ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University women’s soccer team began the new season with its second straight tie, Thursday night, when it ended the evening in a 1-1 draw with No. 4-ranked BYU.
The Billikens and Cougars provided a fierce battle on the field at Hermann Stadium, with BYU notching 20 shots total and nine shots on goal and Saint Louis responding with 11 shot attempts and seven on goal.
But both clubs could only get one each past the opposing team’s goalkeeper.
SLU’s Emily Gaebe scored the first goal of the game and her first goal of the season on brilliant play in the 19th minute, when she stole an errant pass from one BYU defender, then fought off another for the loss ball, before drilling a shot into the right corner of the BYU net to make the score 1-0.
The score sent the large crowd of 3,823 into a frenzy and fired up the entire Saint Louis bench.
The Billikens continued to lead until midway through the second half, when BYU’s Allie Fryer scored to tie the game.
From there, SLU relied on goalkeeper Emily Puricelli, who had eight saves in the game, including three dynamic plays on dangerous scoring chances that kept the game tied.
Saint Louis (0-0-2) will play its first road game of the season on Sunday, when it travels to Columbia to play Missouri. SLU’s next home game will be September 1, when the Billikens will host No. 3-ranked Penn State.
