ST. LOUIS, MO — Five different players scored goals and four others had an assist, as No. 23-ranked Saint Louis University defeated SIU-Edwardsville, 5-1, in a women’s NCAA soccer match Saturday evening at CITYPARK. The match was the first collegiate women’s soccer game played at CITYPARK, home of St. Louis’ professional soccer team, St. Louis CITY SC.
The victory improved Saint Louis’ record to 4-2, while SIUE fell to 2-3-1.
The Cougars, who served as the home team for the match, scored the first goal of the game on a free kick in the fourth minute to take a 1-0 lead. But the Billikens responded with five goals to pull out what became an easy victory.
SLU outshot SIUE 24-4, with 11 of its shots being on goal. The Billikens also had six corner kicks to just one for the Cougars.
Goals by Caroline Kelly (20th minute) and Emily Groark (41st minute) gave SLU a 2-1 halftime lead. Abbie Miller made it 3-1 on a penalty kick in the 56th minute, and Sophia Stram and Samantha De Luca added insurance goals in the 66th minute and 80th minute, respectively.
Kelly’s goal was her team-leading fifth of the season and the 24th of her career, tying Maddie Pokorny for seventh on SLU’s all-time list. Groark and Miller notched their first goals of the season, while Stram and De Luca netted their second goals of the year.
Julia Simon, Izzy Luebbert, Lyndsey Heckel, and Hannah Sawyer were the players who assisted on goals, giving the Billikens a whopping 15 total team assists this season.
Saint Louis will be back in action on Wednesday, when it begins the first of a three-game road trip by traveling to Providence, R.I., to play No. 16-ranked Brown University. That contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. local time and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Billikens will also play Nebraska (September 10) and Loyola Chicago (September 14), before returning home for a match against La Salle at Hermann Stadium (September 17).
