Already ranked No. 3 in the country, the Washington University women’s soccer team pulled off one of its toughest wins of the season Sunday afternoon in Terre Haute, Ind., when the Bears held off previously-unbeaten Rose-Hulman for a 1-0 road victory.

Talented sisters Erin Flynn and Kate Flynn hooked up in the game’s 3rd minute to produce the lone goal. Older sister Erin delivered a slick pass to younger sister Kate, who drilled a shot into the lower right corner past Rose-Hulman goalkeeper Natalie Dillon to put Wash. U. on the board.

From there, both teams just ground at each other, denying scoring chances again and again.

Wash. U. did outshoot Rose-Hulman 18-3, but only six of those shots were actually on goal, and the only one that found the back of the net was the freshman Kate Flynn’s smash early in the game. That goal was the first of Kate Flynn’s college career.

Goalkeeper Sydney Conner made one save to get the shutout for the Bears. It was her fifth win and third shutout of the season.

The victory was Wash. U.’s sixth in a row and improved the Bears’ overall record to 7-0-1. After suffering its first loss of the season, Rose-Hulman’s record is now 4-1-1.

Wash. U. will get a well deserved several days off, before getting back in action next Saturday, October 2, when the Bears will go on the road again to play at Rochester University in New York.

Wash. U.’s next home game will be in two weeks, when the Bears will host Emory College at Francis Olympic Field on Sunday, October 10.

Opening kickoff that day is scheduled for 11 a.m.
