CLAYTON, MO — The No. 3-ranked Washington University women’s soccer team defeated No. 15 Emory University, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon in the UAA league opener for both teams. It was WashU’s eighth straight shutout and the Bears remain the only team in any division in the country that hasn’t let up a goal this season.

WashU improves to 8-0 on the year with a 1-0 mark in UAA play.

The Bears put their first goal on the board at the 4:51 mark. WashU’s defense played a long ball to midfield where Sophie Viscovich controlled it and slipped it to Ella Koleno, who fired a shot into the right corner of the net for her third goal of the season.

WashU put the exclamation point on the win in the 35th minute. First-year Regan Cannon scored her first career goal on a pass from Sara Giannotti, hitting the top right corner of the net.

Emory’s best chance to score was in the 74th minute. What would have been a goal for the Eagles ended up being called back due to an offside call.

The Bears tallied 13 total shots with six on goal while Emory had eight total with five on goal.

Defensively, goalkeeper Sidney Conner earned her sixth blank sheet of the season, making five saves in the net.

WashU hosts Webster University on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., in a midweek non-conference matchup at Francis Olympic Field. The Bears then take on Brandeis on Saturday at 11 a.m., before hitting the road for five-straight games.
