CLAYTON, MO — The No. 3 Washington University women’s soccer team maintained its unbeaten record, Tuesday night, by blanking local rival Webster University, 3-0, in a non-conference match at Francis Olympic Field. The Bears are 9-0 on the year and have not allowed a goal this season.

Three different players scored goals for the Bears. Team leaders Grace Ehlert and Gaelen Clayton both scored their fourth goals of the year, followed by Kate Flynn, who scored her first.

Clayton also picked up her team-best fourth assist. Ally Hackett also had an assist.

WashU broke through for its first goal at the 34:33 mark. Hackett drilled a shot towards the Webster goal, which was knocked down. But the ball bounded to Ehlert, who banged it home to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

The score remained that way until midway through the second half, when WashU scored in the 77th minute on an unassisted play by Clayton. The junior from Mountain View, Calif., finessed a move around the Webster goalkeeper and fired a shot into the back of the Gorlok net.

Clayton had a hand in the third goal of the game less than two minutes later in the 79th minute. A strong cross right in front of the goal from Clayton found the foot of senior Kate Flynn who netted the goal and made it a 3-0 game for the Bears.

The Gorloks had their best chance in the 64th minute on a high shot from Mya Stegen. Senior goalkeeper Sidney Conner made a jumping save to punch the ball out and keep Webster off the board.

WashU controlled the offensive tempo for much of the game, registering 23 total shots with seven on goal, compared to Webster’s six shots with two on goal. The Bears also recorded 10 corner kicks to Webster’s six.

Conner made two saves in the net to record her seventh blank sheet of the season.

The Bears return to action on Saturday morning with an 11 a.m. match at Francis Olympic Field against UAA foe Brandeis.
