The Washington University men’s basketball team took advantage of a hot shooting night from start to finish, Friday evening at the Wash. U. Field House, as the Bears’ stormed past visiting New York University for a 97-61 win.

Senior guard Jack Nolan led all scorers with 29 points, on 10-of-18 shooting, with five of those makes being from three-point land. Friday’s performance was also Nolan’s third straight game with exactly 29 points, as Wash. U. picked up its 12th win in a row.

The Bears, who remain the No. 4-ranked team in the country, according to D3Hoops.com, are now 13-1 on the season, and are also 3-0 in the UAA league standings. The loss dropped NYU to 9-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

In the game on Friday, Wash. U. led almost start to finish and only trailed in the very opening minutes, when NYU hit a three-pointer to go ahead 3-2. The Bears quickly answered, with a bucket by Nolan to take the lead at 4-3, and never trailed again.

In fact, Nolan’s basket sparked a 17-2 run for Wash. U. to gave the home team a 19-5 lead. NYU never got closer than seven points the rest of the game, and trailed by 13 points heading into halftime.

The Bears came out roaring in the second half, and used an 20-4 run, capped by a three-pointer by junior Matt Gonzalo to build its biggest lead of the night at 29 points.

No other Wash. U. players reached double-figures in scoring, but Gonzalo and three other players each had eight points, and senilr Justin Hardy finished the night with nine points and seven rebounds, as just about every Bears player had a good night.

Wash. U. finished the evening shooting 57.1 percent from the floor (40-for-70), while also making 43.3 percent of its three-point attempts (13-for-30). By contrast, NYU shot just 38.8 percent (19-for-49) for the night.

The Bears will be back in action on Sunday, January 23, when they’ll host another UAA league game at the Wash. U. Field House. This time, the Bears will be taking on Brandeis — the team that is in second place in the UAA.

The Judges are 8-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, after having played their first game in more than a month, Friday night against the University of Chicago.

Tipoff for the Sunday game between Wash. U. and Brandeis is scheduled for 12 p.m.
