CLAYTON, MO — After nearly scoring several times in what proved to be a scoreless first half, the Washington University women’s soccer team broke through in a big way in the second half, Sunday afternoon at Francis Olympic Field.

The Bears, who came into the game ranked No. 6 in the country in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Division III poll, scored four times and cruised their way to a 4-0 win over visiting Rhodes College.

The win raised WashU’s season record to 5-0, making the Bears one of just six teams in women’s Division III soccer to remain unbeaten.

WashU got on the board in the 59th minute, after a handball call in the box on a Rhodes defender earned the Bears a penalty kick. Senior Jessica Greven took it and fired a shot past the Rhodes goalkeeper and into the bottom right corner to make it a 1-0 game. It is the second made penalty kick of the season for Greven.

WashU added another goal in the 61st minute as graduate Sam McKibbon put a foot on the ball near the post and it was ultimately knocked in by a Rhodes player to put the Bears up 2-0.

After earning a corner kick in the 71st minute, Gaelen Clayton netted her second goal of the season, taking a short pass from Regan Cannon and firing the ball into the opposite corner, making it a 3-0 game.

WashU scored its fourth and final goal in the 89th minute. Emma Riley-McGahan knocked a short pass to Kate Flynn who crossed the ball where Sara Giannotti was waiting to fire it into the back of the net.

Statistically, the Bears tallied 17 shots with six on goal and earned eight corner kicks. WashU’s defense held Rhodes to just two shots total, both in the first half, with one on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Sidney Conner picked up her third shutout of the year, making one save.

The Bears hit the road on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. game at Illinois Wesleyan, before returning home for the final non-conference tune-up against Rose-Hulman on Friday. The contest is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. WashU will begin UAA league play in two weeks, when it will take on Emory College, Sunday, October 1 at Francis Olympic Field.
