COLLEGE STATION, TX — The No. 9-ranked University of Missouri football team played its first road game of the season on Saturday, traveling to the Lonestar State to take on No. 25 Texas A&M.
But the Tigers showed up and did not look ready for the road.
Maybe a better way to put that is Missouri didn’t show up at all.
The Tigers got flat out walloped in what turned out to be a 41-10 loss to the Aggies. It was the worst Mizzou defeat since it lost 66-24 to Tennessee in 2022.
Nothing went right for the Tigers. Nearly everything went right for the Aggies, who built a 24-0 lead at halftime and then scored on a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play of the third quarter to go up 31-0.
Mizzou was unable to move the ball on its first possession of the second half and A&M added a field goal to make the score 34-0.
At that point, the game was just about over.
The Tigers did score on a 59-yard touchdown pass from Brady Cook to Theo Wease, Jr. But that was one of the very few positive plays of the day for a Missouri team that is sure to take a huge fall when the new Top 25 polls are released on Sunday and Monday.
A&M QB Conner Weigman made just his second start of the season since he suffered a shoulder injury in the Aggies’ season-opening loss to Notre Dame.
Weigman picked apart a Missouri defense that couldn’t get any pressure on him and also made good use of his legs when he had room to run. He finished the game 18-of-22 passing for 276 yards.
Missouri had every right to be upset about a pass interference penalty that was inexplicably picked up on a fourth-down pass attempt on the Tigers’ first drive. Missouri would have been in prime scoring territory had the flag been rightly left on the field.
But that doesn’t explain how poorly the Tigers played the rest of the first half. And even when they showed flashes of excellence, there was something to nullify it. Mizzou had a 75-yard TD pass to Luther Burden III after Texas A&M took a 10-0 lead, but that got wiped away by an accurate call for a lineman down field.
Later in the half, Cook made a heck of a play to scramble for a first down, but that got called back for an illegal formation and Mizzou then punted after failing to convert the ensuing third down.
Moss ended the game with over 100 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
The loss dropped Mizzou to 4-1 on the year and 1-1 in SEC play. The Tigers will be on the road again next week, traveling to Amherst, Mass., to take on UMass.
Kickoff is set for 11 a.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
