ST. CHARLES, MO — The Saint Louis University baseball team earned itself a hard-fought 3-1 win over crosstown rival Lindenwood University, in a non-conference matchup, Tuesday night, at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
Saint Louis got some timely hits and scored three runs in the third inning to take an early lead. The Billikens were then able to use a strong pitching effort the rest of the way to hold off the Lions.
Lindenwood was able to get runners on base in nearly every inning, but just wasn’t able to score the runs it needed to win the game. Late in the game, SLU stymied Lindenwood’s batters, as 11 of the Lions’ final 12 batters struck out to end the game.
On the positive side, Kam Edwards had three hits and drove in Lindenwood’s lone run, while relief pitchers Matt James, Michael Walsh, Carson Subbert, and Graham Breite pitched the final 6 2/3 innings for Lindenwood and combined to give up no runs and just two hits.
For Saint Louis, Patrick Clohisy had two hits, two stolen bases, and scored a run. Pitchers Dawson Smith, Evan Gray, Henry Litman, Ethan Bell, and Owen Kelly combined to give up just the one run on seven total hits, with one walk, and 14 strikeouts.
The Billikens got their runs in the top of third, when Ben Gallaher led off with a single, then scored on an RBI triple by Easton Richter. The next man, Ethan Sitzman drove in Richter with an RBI groundout to make the score 2-0.
Clohisy then singled and stole second. He later scored on a fielding error by Lindenwood first baseman Jack Meyer.
Lindenwood scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth, when Edwards delivered a two-out hit to score Evan Funkhouser.
Litman (1-0) got the win for SLU. It was his first win of the season, while true freshman Owen Kelly picked up his first save. Lindenwood sophomore Easton Rakers (2-1) took the loss, after starting the game and pitcher 2 1/3 innings.
The Billikens (27-10) will continue on the road this weekend for more Atlantic 10 Conference play, with a three-game set in the nation’s capital against George Washington. That series will begin on Friday at 2 p.m.
Lindenwood (13-27) will be at home this weekend to face Ohio Valley Conference foe, Western Illinois. That series will also begin on Friday, with the first pitch at the Lou Brock Sports Complex set for 5 p.m.
