The Gateway Grizzlies managed just one hit and three total baserunners in Tuesday’s Frontier League baseball game at Duly Health and Care Field against the Joliet Slammers. But that one hit drove in the only run of the game and was just enough to earn the Grizzlies a 1-0 win over the Slammers.
No. 8 hitter Tate Wargo and leadoff man Gabe Holt teamed up to provide that one run for Gateway. Wargo was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the sixth inning. He then stole second base and advanced to third when the catcher’s throw got away.
With one out, Holt came up and lined a single to center field that drove in Wargo to get the Grizzlies on the board.
Gateway’s pitching staff made that one run stand.
Starter Deylen Miley (7-3) went six brilliant shutout innings and only allowed one hit himself. He did walk three batters, but he also struck out eight to bring his Frontier League-leading season total 124.
The only scoring trouble Miley faced the entire evening was in the bottom of the first, when he gave up a one-out walk and that runner advanced to third with two outs.
Fortunately, the former Houston Astros minor leaguer got the final out on a pop-up. After that, Miley didn’t have any trouble the rest of the night.
Gateway relievers Alec Whaley and Leoni De La Cruz took over after that. Whaley pitched two scoreless innings after the Grizzlies had taken the lead, and De La Cruz got the final three outs in the ninth to produce his ninth save of the season.
The Grizzlies are now 9-1 against the Slammers in 10 matchups this season and will look to clinch their 10th straight series win, when the teams meet for Game 2 on Wednesday. Teague Conrad will start for Gateway, while Joliet will counter with rookie Landon Smiddy.
