CLAYTON, MO — On a night when it shot nearly 60 percent from the field and knocked down 11 three-pointers, the No. 13-ranked Washington University men’s basketball team rolled to an 88-59 victory over crosstown rival Webster University in a non-conference game at the WashU Field House.
The Bears found their offensive stride early and never looked back, accumulating a 58.1 field goal percentage (36 for 62). WashU also racked up 11 long balls, good for a 44.0 three-point percentage.
WashU utilized their notable size advantage, earning 50 points in the paint. On the other hand, Webster grabbed just 32 points in the paint.
Additionally, 11 Bears found the point column, with 33 of WashU’s 88 points coming from the bench.
Junior Drake Kindsvater topped the Bears in points, with 17. Kindsvater was one rebound shy of a double-double, as the secured nine boards.
Junior Hayden Doyle showcased his patience with the ball and garnered 14 points and dished out a game-high four helpers.
Coming off a career-day, junior Kyle Beedon was credited with 13 points and three rebounds.
Sophomores Yogi Oliff, Will Grudzinski, and Calvin Kapral each corralled eight points in the convincing victory.
First-year George Gale notched a career-high five blocks in the contest.
The Gorloks grabbed a quick, 7-3, lead with 18:01 remaining in the first half. However, the lead was quickly erased on a Doyle long ball and a Kindsvater free throw to even the score at seven. After a defensive rebound by Kindsvater, Doyle drained a three in transition to open up an eight-point, 17-9, lead for the Bears with 15:03 left.
WashU then secured the 10-point advantage on a Kindsvater jumper to put the score at 21-11. With 11:24 left on the clock, Beedon drilled a jumper to push WashU’s cushion to 15, 28-13.
After a few made baskets from the Gorloks, Beedon dialed up a three, on a Doyle assist, to put the Bears ahead by 14, 37-23. The Bears only surrendered one made basket in the final eight minutes of the opening half. The Gorloks went nearly six minutes without recording a bucket.
A tip-in layup from Kindsvater as the first half buzzer sounded produced a wide, 25-point, cushion for the Bears, 50-25, after the first 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, WashU continued its scorching shooting night. With 14:02, the Bears matched their largest lead of the game, 35, on a Beedon three. With the three, WashU earned the 64-29 cushion.
Webster got within 24, 69-45, with 9:23 left in the contest.
However, WashU’s defensive tenacity and lights out shooting did not allow the Gorloks to get any closer. The Bears finished off the contest with a comfortable 88-59 victory.
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday, December 2, when they’ll go on the road to play another non-conference game against Millikin University. Tip off for that contest is set for 2 p.m.
