ST. LOUIS, MO — Saint Louis University senior Ethan Sitzman had two clutch hits and drove in both runs in the Billikens’ 2-1 win over VCU, Thursday evening in a key Atlantic 10 Conference game at the Billiken Sports Complex.
The matchup proved to be a pitcher’s duel, as the starting pitcher for both teams were dynamite. Saint Louis’ Jack Weber went 5 1/3 innings and allowed just one run on four hits, while VCU’s Owen Tappy tossed seven innings and allowed only one run on six hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.
The game went to the bottom of the eighth inning tied at 1. That’s when SLU’s Ian Blazier singled to lead off the inning — his third hit of the game. He then moved to second on a groundout, before scoring what proved to be the game-winning run on a single by Sitzman.

Billiken reliever Charlie Weber — Jack’s brother — who had come in in the sixth inning, closed out the ninth to preserve the SLU victory.
Charlie Weber pitched 3 2/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing just three hits, with no walks, and one strikeout.
VCU did get the tying run on base with one out in the ninth, but Charlie Weber (3-0) got two ground ball outs to end the game. It was his team-leading third win of the season.
The Billikens (21-16, 9-7) and Rams (12-25, 5-11) will finish their series with a doubleheader on Friday. Game 1 is set to begin at 1 p.m., with Game 2 scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
