ST. LOUIS, MO — Ethan Sitzman had four hits, was on base five times, drove in two runs, and scored three runs to lead the Saint Louis University baseball team to a three-game series sweep, Sunday afternoon, thanks to an 11-9 win over Loyola-Marymount at the Billiken Sports Complex.
SLU’s junior second baseman reached base every time he batted and helped power a Billiken offense that banged out 16 hits and scored double figures in runs for the 10th time this season.
In fact, Saint Louis scored at least one run in every inning but the second on Sunday, and even after it trailed briefly 4-2 going into the bottom of the fourth, it responded with four runs of its own to go ahead for good at 6-4.
Sitzman’s home run, which was a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh, was his fourth of the season and tied him with four others (Patrick Clohisy, Tyler Fogarty, Hayden Moore, and Drew Winters) for the team lead.
Clohisy had a hit in the game and extended his season-long hitting streak to 15 games. He also leads the Billikens with a .491 batting average and 26 RBIs. Cole Smith had three RBIs on Sunday and is second on the team with 23 this season.
Saint Louis led 11-5 going into the ninth inning, but Loyola-Marymount scored four times to make the game close again.
Fortunately for the Billikens, dual threat sophomore Easton Richter, who began the game as SLU’s designated hitter, came in to pitch the ninth and struck out the side to close out the game and get his first save of the season.
Starter Charlie Weber had a shaky start and gave up four runs in three innings. So another reliever, freshman Josh Cunningham (1-0), came in to pitch two solid innings to get his first collegiate win.
Saint Louis is now 14-1 on the season and will conclude its current home stand with a matchup against in-state rival Missouri State on Tuesday, March 12.
