NORMANDY, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s volleyball team played one of its best matches of the season and extended its home winning streak to 21, Saturday afternoon, when it defeated crosstown rival, Maryville University, three sets to none in a match at the Mark Twain Building.
UMSL won by scores of 25-22, 31-29, 25-17.
The Tritons are now 9-1 on the season and 2-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Four UMSL players reach double-figures in kills, led by freshman Alayna Santel and sophomore Addison Voorhees, who both had 12 kills. Junior Hannah Copeland and freshman Maggie Johnson each had 10 kills.
UMSL never trailed in the opening set as it raced out to a five-point lead. The lead grew to as many as six, at 22-16, before a 5-0 run by Maryville made the score 22-21.
The Tritons regrouped getting a kill from Copeland and a service ace from Caitlin Bishop to reach set point. The Saints staved off the first set point, but couldn’t fight off a second as Voorhees knocked down her third kill of the stanza to give UMSL the 25-22 set win.
The middle frame was the tightest of the contest with 19 ties and 10 lead changes. Maryville led by three early but the Tritons responded with four straight points to seize a 10-9 lead.
The two sides went back and forth over the next 13 points and were tied at 16. The Saints took a 17-16 lead after an attack error by Jackson but UMSL ran off six straight points to grab its largest lead of the stanza at 22-17 after a kill from Voorhees.
Just like set one, Maryville was unfazed scoring seven of the next eight points to retake the lead at 24-23 after an error by Voorhees.
The Tritons got back-to-back kills from Copeland and Santel to regain the lead and had a chance to serve it out but a kill by Lily Brown extended the set.
The Saints held a 29-28 lead and had their second chance to even the match but UMSL scored the final three points highlighted by back-to-back kills from Voorhees to win the stanza 31-29.
The Tritons dominated the final frame hitting nearly .400 with 17 kills and three aces. Maggie Johnson led the way in the set with seven kills. UMSL led by as many as 10 in the frame and wouldn’t let Maryville get closer than eight points the rest of the way as it took the frame 25-17.
The Tritons finished the math hitting .233, with 51 total kills. Bishop dished out 44 assists and Skylar Weaver led the defense with 21 digs.
UMSL’s next three matches will all be on the road. The Tritons will be in the Kansas City area next weekend for matches against Rockhurst and William Jewell. Then on October 4, UMSL will be in Lebanon, Ill., to play McKendree.
UMSL’s next home match will be October 11 against No. 23 Lewis.
