CLAYTON, MO — After a sluggish first half, the Washington University men’s basketball team looked every bit like the No. 4-ranked team in all of NCAA Division basketball, as the Bears pounded past Rhodes College for a 75-53 win.
Four players scored in double figures for WashU, which outscored Rhodes 48-31 in the second half to turn a 27-22 halftime lead into an eventual blowout victory.
Senior Drake Kindsvater, who missed the second half of last season due to an injury, made a triumphant return. The 6-6 forward from Frisco, Texas, scored 15 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, blocked four shots, and dished out four assists to lead the WashU attack.
Teammate and fellow senior Hayden Doyle also scored 15 points, including five made three-pointers, and had four assists. Junior Yogi Oliff had 11 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Connor May came off the bench in his first collegiate game to score 14 points.
Rhodes began the game on a red hot 10-1 run that seemed to stun just about everyone in the WashU Field House watching. But the Bears responded with a 14-0 run of the own to go ahead 15-10.
The teams traded buckets the rest of the first half, with WashU going into the break ahead by five.
The second half though, was all WashU. The Bears maintained a steady seven-point lead for most of the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Then the Bears exploded and went on a 15-6 run to go up by 16 points with just under six minutes to play. Then, after Rhodes called a timeout to try to break the momentum, WashU followed up with a quick 12-2 run to give the Bears their largest lead of the night at 26 points.
WashU (1-0) will be off the rest of the weekend, but will be back in action next Friday, November 15, when it hosts Rose-Hulman College. Tip off at the WashU Field House that evening is slated for 7 p.m.
