COLUMBIA, MO — Powered by a nine-run outburst, in which sent 12 men to the plate, and banged out eight hits — including two home runs — the University of Missouri baseball team earned itself a thrilling 13-1 win on Tuesday, which allowed the Tigers to complete a season sweep over cross-state rival Lindenwood University.
Missouri got a complete and balanced offensive effort from its lineup on Tuesday, as every member of the starting lineup reached base safely at least once and eight of the nine had at least one hit.
Four Tigers had two hits, including junior third baseman Justin Colon, who drove in Mizzou’s first run with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Fellow junior Danny Corona, sophomore Jackson Lovich, and freshman Mateo Serna were the others to have multiple hits for the Tigers.
Lindenwood tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth, when Anthony Stellato tripled down the right field line, then scored on an RBI groundout by Mitch Cummins.
To that point, the Lions were pitching and playing well. But that only set the stage for Mizzou’s big bottom of the fourth.
Sophomore Jackson Beaman began the inning with a line-shot homer of the left field wall. It was his sixth homer of the season and put Missouri ahead 2-1.
After a groundout and a walk, the next six Mizzou batters all got hits, including RBI singles by Lovich and Brock Daniels, a two-run double by Corona, and Colon’s second RBI hit of the night.
The big blow of the inning came a bit later though, when Matt Garcia launched a three-run homer over the center field wall. That was the senior’s second homer of the season and it put Mizzou up 10-1.
The Tigers added two more runs in the sixth and once Lindenwood went down without scoring in the seventh, the game was called due to the 10-run lead run rule.
The victory was Mizzou’s 20th of the season. The club is now 20-26 on the year. Lindenwood, which is still in just its second season as an NCAA Division I program, fell to 14-30.
The Lions will be back in conference action this weekend. They’ll host Southeast Missouri State in a three-game, Ohio Valley Conference set at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles.
Missouri will host a three-game SEC series against No. 15 South Carolina this weekend.
