STARKVILLE, MS — The University of Missouri men’s basketball team earned one of its most dominant victories of the season on Saturday, when it defeated Mississippi State, 88-64, in a Southeastern Conference game at the Humphrey Coliseum.
Five Missouri players scored in double figures, in a game the Tigers led from start to finish.
Mizzou began the game on an 11-2 run and never trailed at any point. The Tigers led by 31 points in the first half and by as many as 36 points in the second, before cruising to one of its easiest wins of the year.
Mark Mitchell led the way with 17 points, while Shawn Phillips was right behind with 15 points. Anthony Robinson came off the bench to score 13 points, with teammates T.O. Barrett and Trent Pierce adding in 10 points apiece.
Jayden Stone had a stat stuffer day for the Tigers, with eight points, a team-high 10 rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Mizzou shot 51 percent for the game (30-for-59), with eight three-pointers, and were 20-for-24 from the free throw line.
The most important element from the game though, was Missouri’s toughness and defense. The Tigers outrebounded Mississippi State 38 to 26, forced 18 turnovers, and scored 27 points off those turnovers.
In the first half alone, Mizzou had 34 possessions and scored points on 26 of them, while Mississippi State had 35 possessions and scored on just 12 of them — five of those possessions ended with airball Mississippi State shots.

The Tigers are now 20-9 heading into the final week of the regular season and have won three of their last four games. Mizzou is also now 10-6 in SEC league play, which would put the Tigers no worse than tied for fifth in the league standings.
Depending on the outcome of other games around the league on Saturday, Missouri could move as high as tied for fourth, if current fourth-place team Tennessee loses to second-place Alabama in one of the big games of the day around the country.
The Tigers will be on the road again, when they return to the court on Tuesday, March 3. Mizzou will be in Norman to take on longtime foe, Oklahoma, in a contest that will tip off at 6 p.m., and will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
Mizzou’s final regular season game will be next Saturday, March 3, when the Tigers will host Arkansas at Mizzou Arena. Tip off for that matchup is slated for 11 a.m., with the game being broadcast on ESPN.
