LEXINGTON, KY — The University of Missouri men’s basketball team finished the night on a 15-2 run to earn a historic 73-68 win over Kentucky, Wednesday night at Rupp Arena.

The win marks the first in 10 tries on Kentucky’s home floor, while Missouri also improved to 2-0 in Southeastern Conference play for the first time in school history.

Senior forward Mark Mitchell and grad student wing Jayden Stone both eclipsed 20 points in the victory. Mitchell tallied 21, including the go-ahead basket with 36.2 seconds remaining, while Stone added 20 points — his most as a Tiger. Stone also had a team-best seven rebounds.

Junior point guard Anthony Robinson recorded nine points and added a career-best 10 assists, and fellow junior Trent Pierce chipped in key numbers with five points, five rebounds, a personal-best four steals, and three assists.

Kentucky seemed to take control with just under five minutes left in the game, when the Wildcats hit a pair of back-to-back threes to go ahead 66-58. But Mizzou responded with the final run of the night, which began with a quick seven points in less than a minute to get the Tigers back to within 66-65.

The Wildcats scored the next basket, but the Tigers got an alley-oop dunk from Shawn Phillips to make it a one-point game again.

From that point on, Mizzou’s defense didn’t allow Kentucky to score any more points, while taking the lead for good, thanks to a short, turnaround floater from Mitchell with 36.2 seconds left.

The Wildcats committed a turnover and missed a three on its final possessions. Stone added four free throws to help the Tigers close out the night.

Mizzou is now 12-3 on the season and will go for its third straight SEC win on Saturday, when it travels to Oxford, Miss., to take on Ole Miss. That contest will tip off at 5 p.m., and will be televised nationally on the SEC Network.
