ATHENS, GA — The 2025 season ended for the University of Missouri women’s softball team on Tuesday, when the Tigers lost 1-0 to the University of Mississippi in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
The loss dropped Missouri’s record to 25-31 and with that, ended any chance the Tigers had of making the NCAA postseason.
Mizzou entered the tournament as the No. 14 seed and needed to win the whole thing to earn the SEC’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
But even with a stellar pitching effort from sophomore Marissa McCann, the Tigers couldn’t get anything going offensively and didn’t manage to score a single run in what proved to be the final game of the season.
Ole Miss scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, when leadoff hitter Jaden Pone scored on a double by teammate Persy Llamas.
Mizzou had just three hits in the game and did have runners reach scoring position in the first, fourth, and seventh innings. But the Tigers were never able to get the run across they needed to tie the game or go ahead.
Ole Miss will move on to the second round, where it will play No. 6 seed Florida. The winner of that game will meet No. 3 seed Texas in the tournament quarterfinals on Thursday. The SEC Tournament championship game will be on Saturday, May 10, at 4 p.m., and will be televised nationally on ESPN.
The 2025 campaign will be Mizzou’s first losing softball season since 2006, which is also the last time the Tigers didn’t make the NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers had gone to 17 consecutive tournaments under Ehren Earleywine, interim coach Gina Fogue and Larissa Anderson, who has made five appearances and two Super Regionals in the five years the tournament has been played while she has been at Mizzou. Missouri has made seven Super Regionals and three Women’s College World Series appearances during the run.
