COLUMBIA, SC — With its eye on possibly moving up the SEC standings, heading into the final weekend of the regular season, the University of Missouri softball team earned itself a hard-fought, 2-0 win, Friday evening, in a matchup against South Carolina.

Pitchers Laurin Krings and Marissa McCann combined to shut out the Gamecocks and hold them to just three hits.

Krings (12-7) tossed five scoreless innings and gave up the three hits and a walk. But she also struck out three to get the win and never let any South Carolina base runner get past second base.

McCann was perfect in the final two innings to get her second save of the season.

Five Tigers posted hits including RBI knocks from Kara Daly and Katie Chester.

Mizzou jumped out to a 1-0 advantage on an RBI single from Daly in the fourth. Julia Crenshaw knocked a two-out double to left center before coming home on Daly’s base hit.

Daly moved to third on the play, advancing to second on the throw before taking the final bag before home on an error.

The Tigers then increased their lead to 2-0 on an RBI pinch hit single from Chester. Chester connected with a base hit down the left field line in the sixth to plate pinch runner Danielle Blackstun.

The win lifted Mizzou’s overall record to 38-14 and its SEC mark to 11-11, which puts the Tigers in a four-way tie for fifth place in the league standings. More wins this weekend could help Mizzou clinch that fifth spot, and in turn, the No. 5 seed at next week’s SEC Tournament.

Game 2 between Missouri and South Carolina will be on Saturday. The game was originally scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., but due the weather concerns, the start time was moved up to 11 a.m.

The final game of the regular season will be on Sunday at 5 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
